Reassembling the Anchor Windlass

Usual thing meant to tale photos as I stripped this down but forgot all about documenting it.
Anyway after wire brushing and cleaning up I gave it two coats of Etch Prima.

Two of Gray Prima, two of Silver and two Clear Laquer.

So here we are ready to assemble the windlass.

Tt was in good mechanical order and the only new thing needed was new screws to hold the gearbox cover.
The grease I’m using is Ramanol White a high quality Marine Lithium Grease.

This is the case with one of the crown wheels and dog ready to fit.

The dogs are solid bronze and very substantial.

Once the crown wheel is fitted into the case the key can be fitted in to the crown shaft.

Looking into the case at the crown wheel.
Now the actuating wheel can be fitted over the key and the circlip fitted.

Next are the two pinions and there stub axles.

The two stub axles are threaded into the top and bottom of the case.

Next the main bronze shaft is fitted and you can see the second crown wheel and spring along with the dogs and spacer ready to go in.
The two Dogs and spring in place and the second crown wheel ready to be fitted.

Crown wheel fitted and cover ready to go on.

Gear box is now assembled and ready for the Gipsy.

Gipsy brake is fitted over the shaft and key ready for the Gipsy, chain stripper and the outer half of the brake.

Warping drum fitted over the key and secured.

Ready to fit on the boat.

Let me know if you have any questions.
